100% Cotton, 51″ Wide   Corduroy was first advertised in London in 1756 but did not become popular until the late 1780s. This is a narrow wale corduroy at about 15 wales per inch. From the late 1780s and into the 19th century corduroy was commonly used for working class men’s waistcoats breeches & trousers & children’s clothing but could also be used for women’s outerwear such as early 19th century spencers but also in trims & accessories. For example in The Connecticut Journal of 1775 it was advertised “To be Sold at Public Vendue, peremptorily to the highest Bidder, for Cash only . . .  a most neat and excellent Assortment of English and India Goods . . .  consisting of the following Articles . . .  Manchester Velvets, Corduroys”. Black 35/2 linen thread will work well for hand sewing & for buttonholes try black silk buttonhole twist  or quilter’s thread.
